College Apps

EVERYONE IS GETTING SO STRESSED OUT OVER THEM

I didn't get into Yale, I didn't get into Occidental, CALM DOWN!
Listen, take a deep breath
you have to realize that your world is not over
maybe this is an opportunity in disguise
maybe you'll go to another school and meet the person you'll want to spend the rest of your life with
maybe you'll see something in a completely different way
maybe you'll be amazed by something you never had the time or patience to see before, like a ladybird on a leaf and think, "Wow! I can't believe I never saw this before!"
In any case, you have to take it all in strides
I understand it's hard right now
you've put all of yourself into something that doesn't think you're good enough,
well you know what?
If they don't accept you for who YOU are, then THEY're not worth it.

Jisatsu Saakuru

Are you tied to you? Like between you and me, victim and assailant... you and your boyfriend. Can you relate to yourself? Are you connected to yourself? Are you sought by yourself? When the rain dries, clouds form.

Jisatsu Saakuru, (suicide Circle), a Japanese "horror" film by Sion Sono, is a puzzle. It opens with a scene of 54 cheerful teenage girls throwing themselves in front of a train. With ridiculously controversial material, many people think the film is just a sick attempt to get as much gore out of a movie as possible. Americans in particular have criticized the gruesome scenes (yes, it involves rape, killing animals, and suicide; three of the most taboo ideas today) and seen them as Sono's disgusting attempt to push lines as far as possible. However, I think that we as a people are getting too shallow to see the meaning underneath.

While the film, in all its racy glory, does contain gore (the main plot is that detectives are trying to understand why so many people have been committing suicide, what do you expect?), the movie's whole point is to make you question yourself, are you really connected to yourself?

However, to understand whether or not you are connected to yourself, you must first understand what it is to be connected and then how can you make yourself connected. It's a mind blowing concept, but Sono never reveals what the answers to these questions are, rather, leaving each viewer to try and figure out whether or not they are connected. Very appropriate, but infuriating at the same time. After pondering for months, I still can't fathom what it means.

What is connectedness?? Maybe it's when you are sincerely not ashamed of yourself; when you can fully accept who you are and not let what anyone else thinks about who you are matter in the slightest.

Maybe it's simply when you can say, "yes, I am connected to myself," without any hesitation, with no doubt in your mind.

Perhaps you are connected when you choose to live because it makes YOU happy, because you give yourself a reason to live, as opposed to living just because somebody else in the world needs you.

Even though I have musings, I think when I find it, I'll have no doubt that I've found it.

If you have any ideas, any ideas at all, even if you haven't seen the movie, please comment (, even though no one reads my blog haha.).

Can you ever be connected to yourself?

I-FEEL-RETARDED-RIGHT-NOW

I definitely thought today was Thanksgiving
I got out of bed early, worked, got everything out of the way, made a panda run with my brother and sister, and there's a sign on the door that says, "Panda Will Be Closed on Thanksgiving Day. Sorry For The Inconvenience." So, I was like, huh, there seem to be people inside, that's weird...
My brother and sister kinda think I'm retarded right now.
I guess that was why my mom wasn't working running around preparing things.
...Damn, I was really looking forward to turkey today, too..

Unveiling Myself

Whoa! I just realized that I'm completely anonymous to everyone!
Well, here's me concentrate:

Name: Dan
Age: 17 (Born on 3/26/91)
Location: Southern California
General: My friends think I'm funny and I like to think that too. I'm really into acting (I wanted to pursue it as a career until I realized how hard it is to be a successful actor, BOO :( ) and I love music. I'm a really eclectic person and I love to try new things. Recently, I've become really interested in languages and really want to become good at them (Let's see.. French, Japanese, Korean, Greek, and Spanish to name some..). College is coming up really fast and all the apps have asked, "What do you want to major in?" It seems a silly question, I mean, trying to wrap your head around what you want to do with the rest of your life is a little scary, a lot scary actually. However, after taking lots of time to think, I've seen myself as being someone who works in language or psychology or theatre.. Arg, life is so full of choices, it's ridiculous. Anyways, yup. I have a brother and a sister. Oh, and I'm a triplet (my mom was a hippopotamus!). I'm silly, I laugh a lot, and I try to have a positive outlook on things, though things get me down a lot, I'm only human after all. Oh well..
Music: I love all sorts of bands. To name some (although definitely not all!) Big Bang, Wondergirls, Carla Bruni, Edith Piaf, Stance Punks, Daft Punk, Tupac, Nas, Gorillaz, Reel Big Fish, DJ Tiesto, Regina Spektor, many more, I'm sure if I had the patience I would name more, but I'm not exactly in a writing mood (see below post:P) so yeah.
Movies: First of all, Battle Royale. All time favorite movie ever period. I love foreign films, I sometimes watch movies without even knowing wha they're about just because they're foreign and look interesting. Korean and Japanese movies are really awesome, to name a few, Wishing Stairs, The Host, BR I and II. I also love french movies, La Vie en Rose was beautiful. Yeah.

Well, that's all for now, I hope you enjoy getting to know me.

Turkey Week Dichotomy

One generally associates Thanksgiving with, what? Stuffing? Family? Togetherness? Fall? All that crap that makes you wanna punch Marth Stewart in the face? Yup.

My Thanksgiving, however, has not been very exciting or full of the above phenomena. Rather, I have had to work on college apps, a long and arduous process. I am allowed to work on college apps and do nothing else until all the UCs are done as well as USC. NOTHING else.
Not that I've been sticking to this rule, but it's still hard to get around it...

A whole week without school is not as appealing as it may seem :P

Things that have been keeping me alive are:
  • Short trips to Seoul/Lotte Market while my mom is out doing things
  • "Petsitting" (I spend ten minutes taking care of the pets of a family that did something fun on their break and take advantage of their TV, piano, etc for an hour.)
  • Big Bang, Wonder Girls, Edith Piaf, Tupac, and Nas (eclectic mix, haha)
  • http://mymomisafob.com and http://failblog.org
  • Starting a blog (hey, that's you!)
Oh well, happy thanksgiving everybody, I hope you're having more fun than I am
